“You have to think like an American. You’ll feel so homesick that you’ll want to die, and there’s nothing you can do about it apart from endure it. But you will, and it won’t kill you. And one day the sun will come out - you might not even notice straight away, it’ll be that faint. And then you’ll catch yourself thinking about something or someone who has no connection with the past. Someone who’s only yours. And you’ll realize… that this is where your life is.”  Brooklyn (2015)

“[Saoirse’s] a really, really brilliant actress. I call it playing tennis, and she’s a great tennis player. You can just have moments and bounce the moments off of each other right there in the scene, and not be exactly sure how the moment is going to come back to you. It just has to be spontaneous every time and that’s fun when you can work with someone who is that talented.“ - Emory Cohen on working with Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn.

“I felt I was hovering between two age groups for a while, and I couldn’t quite land in either, and then Brooklyn came along and it was perfect. When I was doing the film last year, it was an emotional shift for me. And I felt there was a lot in my own life that was shifting too. It’s such an interesting time for women, and I don’t know why it’s not written about more. There’s so much that’s changing for you at this age, and so many adjustments that a woman has to make when it comes to her friendships and relationships, work and sex, and how she feels about herself and where she stands on certain things. I’m going through all of that now, so I feel it’s important to see a woman going through that on screen.”
